The holiday season can be a bit overwhelming. These days there are Christmas decorations up at stores before Halloween, it’s easy to get stressed out and feel ‘behind’ before the season has even started!
I have found freedom in traditions. Once Doug and I started having our own little family, we realized that traditions are what we remember and cherish. Tradition points me to the real reason of the christmas, the birth of my Savoir. Tradition gives me the smell of a christmas tree. The taste of egg nog. Putting up our stockings while old Christmas songs play. Christmas is my favorite season, and it is because of the wonderful memories I have in the small simple moments.
One of our family traditions we have started with our boys is getting our Christmas tree. We get hot coco before, and we bring our dog Sonny with us to the tree lot. Our boys run around and we pick out our favorite tree. We make a big afternoon out of it, and it starts out the season of Christmas in our household. We usually decorate the tree and then pop popcorn and watch a movie in our bed all together.
I know I can get overwhelmed with all the events and to-dos the season brings, but that is not what it is about. Family. Birth. New beginnings and redemption. It is a season to celebrate. I am not sure what your traditions are, but I would love to hear them! And if you haven’t started any, it is never too late. The simple act of getting our tree use to be a chore and now it marks the beginning of such a special time for our household. There is freedom in that and traditions I hope my boys carry on to their own families one day.
